Tamil Nadu has a long coastline that stretches nearly a 1000 kms. The Coromandel Coast, along the Bay of Bengal, boasts of many ideal locations for sun and surf. The sea washes ashore pebbles and shells and the gentle breeze sways the yachts and catamarans into the deeper waters of the sea and the waters form small dunes on the shore. Crabs play hide-and-seek by coming out of one burrow, and taking refuge in another. Sea gulls hover in the sky and then rest on the sails of the fishing boats. Mahabalipuram

World famous for its shore temples, Mahabalipuram, were the second capital of the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram. 58 kilometres from Madras on the Bay of Bengal, this tiny sea side village of Mahabalipuram, is set in a boulder strewn landscape. Tourists are drawn to this place by its miles of unspoiled beach and rock-cut art. The sculpture of this place, is particularly interesting, because it shows scenes of day-to- day life, in contrast to the rest of the state of Tamil Nadu, where carvings generally depict gods and goddesses.

Kanchipuram

Situated at a distance of 70 kms to the south of Chennai, Kanchipuram is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites by the Hindus. The temple city of Kanchipuram is also the seat of the Sankaracharya. Devotees throng the holy city all round the year from both India and abro ad in spite of the sultry weather conditions for most part of the year. The city was the capital of the Pallavas, Cholas and the Vijayanagar rulers during different times in history. All of them invested lots of time, energy and fortune in building the magnificent Kanchi temples.

Perhaps why those who visited this hill station have come back enchanted and thrilled. The wooded slopes of kodaikkanal are filled with surprises. Kurinji a plant special to that region turns the slopes into a sea of purple- once in 12 years! Step out of your room and right onto a star shaped sheet of glittering water. Yes, the Kodai Lake dominates this sleepy hill station. But wait a minute, the lake is actually man-made Go on; take that boats and paddles away. A short walk from the lake (yes, walking is the best way to reach any place interesting in tiny Kodai) and you can enjoy a magnificent display put by nature at Bryant's perk. Those with stars in their eyes can catch a glimpse of the heavens (literally speaking) at the Solar Observatory and from Kodai's two telescope houses.

Rameshwaram

Rameswaram, a small island in the Gulf of Mannar, is a major pilgrim centre .It is connected to the mainland by road and rail bridges. Rameswaram is holy, because Sri Rama, on his return from Sri Lanka, offered his thanks to Lord Shiva and performed pooja to wash away his sins which he got by killing Demon King, Ravana. Besides pilgrimage, Rameswaram Island has several places which ideally suites for picnic programme. There are beautiful beaches at Olaikuda, Dhanushkodi and Pamban. Olaikuda beach (1 km) from the main temple is engulfed by coral reefs which makes sea bathing safe and enjoyable .With diving glasses and respiration tubes, Scuba diving can be done safely. Australian Flamingos, Sea Gulls and variety of birds migrates to Rameswaram Island during winter. Rameswaram is one of the main fishing centres of Tamil Nadu. Variety of fishes including export quality fish like prawns, sea cucumber, lobster etc. are available, Rameswaram is also famous for its dry fish.

Ooty (Udagamandalam)

Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam, which stands 7,349 feet above sea level in the Nilgiris, is known as the Queen of southern hill resorts of India. Ooty, as it is popularly known, spreads over 36 square miles, and the temperature ranges from 25 degree celsius in summers, to near freezing in winters. This famous hill station is at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, three southern states of India. It was founded by the Britishers, in the early part of the 19th century, to serve as summer headquarters for the government of Madras. Before that time, the area was inhabited by Todas. These tribal people still inhabit the area, but only around 3000 remain.

Tanjore / Thanjavur

A city of tremendous historical significance, Thanjavur can still be regarded as the dotting guardian of Tamil culture. An agricultural hub, Thanjavur or Tanjore was the royal city of Cholas, Nayaks and Mahrattas during medieval period. Also called the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, the place is famous for its handicrafts. Thanjavur still preserves and promotes classical arts and music, Bharatnatyam dances and the Tanjore style of painting.

Trichy/Tiruchirapally

Tiruchirappalli now called Trichy is situated on the banks of the Cauvery river. Trichy, the fourth largest city in the state was a citadel of the early Cholas which later fell to the Pallavas. But the Pallavas never really managed to retain control of this strategic city and lost it to the Pandyas several times.Tiruchirappalli is known for its Rock Fort and its temple at a height of over 83 metres. Other renowned temples are the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Srirangam), Siva temple at Tiruvanaikkaval and the Samayapuram.

Kumbhakonam
